To get into the character perfectly, Joaquin lost 52 pounds for this movie. In an interview, he has stated that this losing of weight was a tough journey for him. Going to extreme lengths for this loss of weight was quite tough as this almost became an ‘eating disorder’ for Joaquin.

Joaquin admitted to Jimmy Kimmel, a TV host, that this journey was definitely tough but empowering. The level of control you need for that amount of weight loss gives you a sense of achievement. There were times when he had to convince himself for almost 30 seconds to take the flight of stairs. According to Phoenix, this journey of weight loss was tough but being able to reach the target weight tends to excite and energize you in a unique manner.

Joaquin admitted that this loss of weight was definitely a strain as he did not socialize during this time. This was to stay away from the temptation of booze and food. He also stayed away from TV as it was difficult watching all those commercials with food. This level of control over him was a liberating experience.

In an interview with AP, Phoenix expressed that the fasting was absolutely necessary for carrying out the mannerisms of the Joker in a way that the director, Todd Philips and he had envisaged.

Joaquin says that he had anticipated the feelings of hunger, dissatisfaction, weakness and a type of vulnerability with weight loss but had not anticipated the fluidity kind of feeling. He admitted that he was able to move his body in a way which had never happened before.

Todd Philips wanted the character ‘Joker’ to look unhealthy and hungry and Joaquin ate a little more than one apple in a day.

This type of weight loss in a short period of time is dangerous but could be managed by Joaquin as he was under medical supervision.

According to People, Phoenix admitted that extreme weight loss in a short span of time can have an impact on the psychology of anyone, and there are chances of getting mad. Losing 52 pounds normally takes around a year. No one should even try losing weight in such a short span of time as this is unhealthy and can also be life-threatening.
